Only last month Brighton & Hove City Council were patting themselves on the back for their stand against the bedroom tax. But far from opposing this assault on the poorest, the Council has in fact started threatening them with court proceedings and eviction.
People on very low incomes suddenly landed with additional bills to pay for council tax and/or bedroom tax have already been sent eviction warnings and summonses. Thousands more are in the pipeline.
The intention is plain – to terrorise poor people into paying over money they can’t afford. No matter if it leaves them penniless, or pushes them into the hands of loan sharks, or even drives them to suicide.
As part of the National Day of Action called by the Campaign for Benefit Justice we are holding a protest on Friday 31 May to call for the council to stop this hounding of vulnerable people.
Meet at St Peters Church with placards & noise-makers.
